Our Music

...

Our music is led by Schola Adventus, the resident choir at Church of the Advent, San Francisco’s historic Anglo-Catholic parish. There they have quickly established a reputation as one of the Bay Area’s premier a cappella choral ensembles, specializing in Gregorian Chant and Renaissance polyphony. They are directed by Dr. Paul Ellison.

Each week, the Gregorian propers are sung to the traditional chants in Latin (translations are provided in the bulletin, also downloadable from the website). Advent is the only Episcopal church in the Bay Area where these can be heard in their intended form. Each week, an anthem and a motet are also offered. During the season after Pentecost, the ordinary will be sung to Healey Willan’s Missa de Sancta Maria Magdalena

On third Sundays, a setting of the ordinary of the Mass is sung. In November, it will be the Communion Service in C by John Ireland. For full details of the season, please see our Music Blog.

If you aren't able to attend High Mass in person, please consider joining us for the live-stream found on the Parish's Facebook page. Please see the link below.

Our weekly Vigil Latin Mass is live-streamed every Saturday at 5 p.m. The propers are sung by cantors to the traditional Gregorian chants and the congregation joins in the Ordinary.
