General Announcements

Already One Body By Father Paul Allick

A few weeks back I stopped by a neighboring café to see how the remodeling under the new owner was going. This is a place that Fr. Porter and I and others from Advent often frequent. Helen, the new owner, asked me if I would bless the place after all the work was done. I said I would be happy to but then gave her my standard disclaimer, “We aren’t Roman Catholics, we’re Episcopalians.” We look and talk like Roman Catholics and I do not want to mislead anyone. Helen gave the response I often hear, “Oh, that doesn’t matter. We all pray to God.” Then she added, “We’re Greek Orthodox anyway.” It was beautiful thing to bless the café right smack in the middle of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. It reminds me again that we are already one body in Christ, we just don’t accept it. This is especially true on so many levels for those of us from the Catholic Traditions. In his book of catechetical instruction Episcopal Priest Hugh C. Edsall points out that if they sat down for a chat an Anglican/Episcopal priest, a Roman priest, an Old Catholic priest, and an Orthodox priest could all agree on the Trinity, the Incarnation, the doctrines of the Great Councils, the Sacramental principle, the importance of Scripture, the love of God, the gift of healing, the importance of Apostolic Succession, the value of scientific knowledge, Christ’s presence in the Eucharist, the truth of the Nicene Creed, how to get to heaven and how to avoid hell, and the power of prayer. That is a lot of agreement. Let’s all say, “Amen.”

Welcome to the new Vestry members who were elected last Sunday at the Annual Meeting. They are Ms. Sally Schweikart, Junior Warden and Mr. Aaron Conner, Vestry Member and Dr. Shelly Fernandez, Vestry Member.

Sunday Confession: Heard by Br. Jude Hill this Sunday, January 29 at 10:30 a.m. and Fr. John Porter next Sunday, February 5 at 10:30 a.m.

A special thank you to all who were able to attend our Annual Meeting on Sunday, January 22. It was a wonderful way to gather as a community and acknowledge each other's work over the past year. I was so pleased to see newcomers and visitors present! We had a hard conversation about money but it didn't seem to dampen our mood too much. This gives me hope. We are taking our financial situation very seriously but it is like dealing with any difficulty in our life: attitude makes all the difference. And of course prayer and faith give us a better attitude. Thanks for calling me to be your Rector. - Fr. Paul

Thursday, February 2, the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord Jesus Christ, also known as Candlemas, will be observed with the Blessing of Candles, Procession & High Mass at 6:30pm with Evening Prayer preceding at 6pm. A reception will follow.

We will be having our Annual Vestry/Leadership Retreat on Saturday, February 25. All are welcome to attend. Just RSVP with Sr. Warden Tom Veitch by Saturday February 11. We will be meeting at Bethany United Methodist Church, 1270 Sanchez Street, SF 94114 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Next Sunday's readings will be

Isaiah 58:1-9a; 1 Corinthians 2:1-12; Matthew 5:13-20.

Reflection Corner

Let us prayerfully support the new members of the Vestry in their ministry to this parish:

“Almighty and everliving God, source of all wisdom and understanding, be present with those who take counsel for the renewal and mission of your Church. Teach us in all things to seek first your honor and glory. Guide us to perceive what is right, and grant us both the courage to pursue it and the grace to accomplish it; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
