Welcome to the website of Church of the Advent of Christ the King, a parish of the Episcopal Church. We are an Anglo-Catholic church, that is, one with a strong emphasis on worship and the life of prayer. Here, in addition to a warm welcome by a diverse group of people, you will find an atmosphere of quiet reflection on the presence of God, great beauty in the visual aspects of corporate worship, and music that inspires and transforms. Here, through our life of prayer, you will find people committed to bringing the love of God, Incarnate in his Son, into the lives of all. I hope that we can touch your life with that love as you join us in worship of the Creator.

Last Sunday's Offering

Last Sunday's Attendance

Today's readings will be Acts 11:1-18; Psalm 148; Revelation 21:1-6; John 13:31-35.

General Announcements

Sunday taking precedence, the commemoration of Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria, 373, is reduced.

Today, the Book of Esther will be the focus of study in “readers’ theatre” format, 1-1:50pm in Lathrop Hall. Do come whether or not you attended the first session.

On Thursday, the Society of St. John the Evangelist will be remembered at the 7:30am Mass, it being their patronal feast day. SSJE kept Advent running 1921-1941.

Saturday, 10am-2pm, join a work party to spruce up Lathrop Hall by touching up the walls and doors with paint; come for all or any part of this session. Lunch will be provided. If able to attend, please contact Sam Cantin (southboy_sam@yahoo.com) or Ler Nelson (lernelson@gmail.com).

Saturday, at 4:30pm, the rosary will be recited as it will every Saturday in May, Our Lady’s month, as part of the ministry of the Regina Coeli Cell.

Ricardo Avila will graduate from CDSP (2451 Ridge Road, Berkeley) with a M. Div. on Friday, 21 May, at 10:30am, and is scheduled to be ordained as a transitional deacon on Saturday, 5 June, at 2pm, at Grace Cathedral. All are invited to attend. Ricardo has appreciated all the encouragement and prayerful support from the parish over these three years.

Order straightway the May Book Club selection: It's especially exciting because Fr Basil, on Tues, 25 May, at 7pm, will lead our conversation about a book written by his sister. Waiting For Bluebirds by June Matthews is an evacuee’s journey through the Second World War. Order soon as the book is 273 pages and most copies come from England. It can be purchased through Amazon books via our website, or, as the time is drawing near, see Fr Basil.

In June, July, and August, the rosary will be recited only on the first Saturday of the month at 4:30pm. After this experiment, the members will meet to evaluate the success of the new time for the rosary. We will need volunteers to lead the weekly recitation throughout May, so if you are available on any Saturday in May, please contact the Regina Coeli Cell secretary, Pamela Vaughn, at plvaughn@gmail.com.

From this afternoon until Sun evening, 9 May, the Rector will be accompanying Fr Michael on the Walkabouts in the Diocese of Utah. For pastoral emergencies only, phone 415-948-6921.

Next Sunday, being Rogation Sunday, High Mass will conclude with blessing of the Hardcastle Garden.

Only 12 more days for the challenge grant to support the Advent music ministry: For every donation of any amount, up to a total of $500, an anonymous donor will provide a matching donation. Thus $500 in total donations can become $1000. For the choir, which presently has no budget even for music scores or binders, this support would be most welcome. The deadline for donations to be included in this matching contribution is Ascension Day, 13 May. Please make your checks payable to Church of the Advent of Christ the King, and indicate St. Cecilia Guild on the memo line.

Mark Ascension Day, Thu, 13 May, on your calendar as this Feast will be celebrated with a High Mass at 6:30pm.

Support Episcopal Charities by attending a reception and concert at Grace Cathedral on Fri, 21 May, at 6pm, for only $100 ($50 tax-deductible). For information or tickets, which must be purchased in advance, go online to www.episcopalcharities.org/nol.html.

Next Sunday's readings will be Acts 16:9-15; Psalm 67; Revelation 21:10, 22-22:5; John 14:23-29.

Reflection Corner

The Society of St John the Evangelist celebrates St John in Eastertide on 6 May. Remembering how much this parish owes to their ministry in the past, let us prayerfully support them, and all religious, in the present:

“O Lord Jesus Christ, you became poor for our sake, that we might be made rich through your poverty: Guide and sanctify, we pray, those whom you call to follow you under the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, that by their prayer and service they may enrich your Church and by their life and worship may glorify your Name; for you reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.”
