General Announcements

From Confusion to Concord By Father Paul Allick

I have not been successful at building a protective opinion bubble around myself. I have tried over the years but it keeps getting holes in it. My extended circle of family and friends is too diverse for me to dismiss whole groups of people as too “uninformed” or “unworthy” of my time. My circle encompasses a wonderful variety of ethnic backgrounds and religious and political viewpoints. Dismissing those I disagree with would mean losing people I love very much. I have also made the mistake of serving as a priest in a wide range of socio-economic and ethnic settings. Darn there goes my bubble again. In all of it I have learned how to speak and listen to many cultural languages. My favorite part of the Pentecost story is when everyone begins to understand each other’s language. It is a magnificent reversal of that sad incident at the Tower of Babel. At that time everyone spoke one language but human arrogance and rebellion ruined it. Confusion set in. No one would or could listen to each other anymore. At Pentecost God gave us the ability to hear each other again. This is my prayer for our church and our nation this Pentecost weekend, “Oh that we could start understanding each other again or at least give it a try.” Diversity is not about people of different backgrounds getting together and adopting group think. It is about people of different backgrounds discovering how to live in concord despite our differences.

Today marking the end of Paschaltide, the Font will be blessed and Baptismal promises renewed at High Mass.

The Day of Pentecost & Music Memorial Sunday - Donations can be given to be placed in the Music Endowment Fund, and the names of loved ones added to a permanent list that will printed in the bulletin on every Music Memorial Sunday (Christ the King and Pentecost Sunday each year). Today's Mass setting will be Byrd's Mass for Four Voices. Tax-deductible donations are welcome now or at any time. Please make checks payable to Church of the Advent with the designation of “Music Memorial.”  Checks, together with the name of the person(s) being memorialized (printed, please!) can be given or sent to Jude Morton, Chair, St. Cecilia Guild, Church of the Advent of Christ the King, 162 Hickory Street, San Francisco, CA 94102. Thank you. Paul Ellison, for the St. Cecilia Guild.

Sunday Confession: Heard by Fr. Paul Allick this Sunday, June 4 at 10:30am and Fr. John Porter next Sunday, June 11 at 10:30am.

Beginning Monday, use Proper 4 for the readings and collect when reciting the Daily Office (see BCP page 968 for the former and for the latter, page 229).

Bible study will resume this Wednesday, June 7, in Lathrop Hall. Please join us after evening mass, about 7:10 p.m. to 8 p.m. for this worthwhile ministry!

Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday this week, the Ember Days, pray for all those embarking upon new ministries (see BCP p. 256).

Join us for the last Third Sunday Series concert of the spring season on Sunday June 18 at 4pm for Romance for Three Instruments and a Voice. Music by Chanson Madecasses by Ravel; Oblivion by Piazzolla; Viola Songs by Brahms with Lauren Carley - voice; Daniel Lockert - piano; Vicoria Hauk - flute; Gael Alcock - cello . A festive reception will follow. There is a suggested donation of $20.00.

Advent Renewal, our 5-year action plan for the parish, will launch soon, after presenting to Vestry on May 28. You have a lovely graphic (thanks to Fr John) illustrating our major areas of emphasis in your Sunday bulletin. More details will be forthcoming soon. In the meantime, please address any concerns or questions to Fr Paul or Pamela Vaughn, chair.

Next Sunday's readings will be

Genesis 1:1-2:4a; 2 Corinthians 13:11-13; Matthew 28:16-20.

Reflection Corner

In the spirit of Saint Columba may we too bring those who are wandering in darkness to the true light:

“O God, by the preaching of your blessed servant Columba you caused the light of the Gospel to shine in Scotland: Grant, we pray, that, having his life and labors in remembrance, we may show our thankfulness to you by following the example of his zeal and patience; through

Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.”
