Today's readings will be Deu 30:9-14; Col 1:1-14; Luke 10:25-37.
Sunday taking precedence, the commemoration of St Benedict, Abbot, ca 540, properly today, will be noted only in the collect concluding the Prayers of the People. The spirituality of this father of Western monasticism has animated this parish over the decades.
According to English lore, whatever the weather on St Swithin’s Day this Thursday, so it shall remain for the next forty days.
Saturday, at 3pm, please help prepare bagged lunches in Lathrop Hall for the guests at Canon Kip Community Center, who will be visited the next day (see below).
Next Sunday, 18 July, assemble in Lathrop Hall at 10:15am to depart for Canon Kip Community Center: There we will be distributing bagged lunches to the guests, a mixture of older low-income people and street people, who appreciate our food as well as the time we take to show that we care as we shall be visiting with the guests also. Please sign up in Lathrop Hall if able to help. See Bonnie Barberini for details.
The Independence Day Deacons’ Fare was a success, thanks to the volunteers who showed hospitality in serving ¬numerous plates to our homeless guests in the parish garden.
A call for female choristers: In the absence of Schola Adventus this summer, Paul Ellison would like to establish a women’s chant choir to assist in singing on 8 and 22 August. Any female volunteers who would like to sing in this group should contact Paul soon (music@advent-sf.org) as he plans to hold an audition in late July. It is important to have a basic knowledge of chant notation (square note notation). In order for the group to be viable, we need at least four singers.
Next Sunday, remember one and all to bring some simple edible (e.g., a bag of cookies from the grocery store) or drink to share at coffee hour as we offer fellowship. As we have no designated hosts in the summer, any help setting up or cleaning up would be appreciated.
Consider sponsoring Fr Jack Fredricks, who will be participating in the AIDS WALK for the 20th time next Sunday, 18 July. He would welcome any donations; no amount is too small. Checks should be made out to AWSF and can be handed to him or sent to him at P.O. Box 296, San Mateo, Calif 94401.
Next Sunday's readings will be Genesis 18:1-10a; Colossians 1:15-28; Luke 10:38-42.
Let us pray for all those observing any Benedictine rule and for ourselves that we all may prove faithful on our earthly pilgrimage:
“Almighty and everlasting God, whose precepts are the wisdom of a loving Father: Give us grace, following the teaching and example of thy servant Benedict, to walk with loving and willing hearts in the school of the Lord’s service; let thine ears be open unto our prayers; and prosper with thy blessing the work of our hands; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”
