Lauren Carley, Contralto

Lauren Carley specializes in concert stage, cabaret, theatre, and collaborative work, singing for composers Philip Glass, Hugo Weisgall, Miriam Gideon, Walter Hilse, Judith Lang Zaimont and John Cage as well as filmmakers and playwrights to interpret and premier their work. She sings liturgically and in performance with the renaissance ensemble Schola Adventus . Her solo CD Hooked on Weill, recorded with bay area jazz, classical and tango musicians features ingenious arrangements of songs from her touring one-woman show Venus Envy.

Ms. Carley directs community choruses, teaches The Joy of Singing for SF-State and UC-Berkeley, leads vocal workshops in the US, Mexico and Italy. Repertoire includes sacred chant, Italian Lauda, classical and traditional rounds and part-songs from world traditions, pop and theatrical songs. Carley maintains a private voice and sight-singing instruction studio.

Past appointments include: California Artist-in-Residence; MacDowell Colony Residency recipient; Director of Vocal and Choral Studies at the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music; conductor for the Oakland Youth Chorus; Instructor of the Art of Solo Performance and Voice for the Theatre at Colorado College; Adjunct Professor of Voice at New York University; vocal faculty at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy; Vocal Department Head and Master Coach for Birch Creek Music Academy. Carley is a former Company Member and Music Director for the all-female Shakespeare Company Woman’s Will. Carley premiered George Coates Performance Works’ 20/20 Blake at the International Festival of the Arts in São Paulo, Brazil and was a 15-year core member of the EmmaTroupe Interdisciplinary Theatre Lab in New York City.
