Concerts for the Community

Church of the Advent is interested in partnering with local groups and institutions in presenting excellent music for the community. This beautiful, acoustically rich and centrally located venue is available for a very small investment.


We are now accepting bookings for the 2018 series which will run from September 2018 to June 2019. Several dates are still available. Please be in touch soon if you are interested. Unfortunately we are not currently able to offer the church as a venue for performances outside of the Third Sunday Series of afternoon performances.


The current church building, consecrated in 1944, is known for its spare beauty and its peaceful, contemplative atmosphere. The church windows are made entirely of yellow glass, which was the only glass available after the 1906 earthquake. The parish has kept this glass intact as part of our historical legacy. The church seats approximately 110 people in the pews, with an additional 20 in chairs at the back and 20 in the choir loft, for a maximum of 150. The building is popularly known as a “jewel box” for its acoustical qualities, which are particularly suited to voice, strings, and harpsichord. There is a two-manual tracker action German Baroque Bosch organ in the choir loft which is also available for use as either a solo or accompanying instrument. Adjacent to the church is a beautiful walled garden and parish hall, available for receptions. Performers may sell CDs and promote future events at concert receptions.


Church of the Advent provides the venue and promotional assistance for a nominal fee of $150.00. Assistance with hosting of reception is available for a token charge of $50.00.

These fees are due on the first on the month of the concert, payable by check made out to "Church of the Advent" and marked "Third Sunday Series"


Your program should be no longer than an hour. 50 minutes is ideal. There is usually no interval. This is to allow ample time for the reception. Our motto is "leave your audience wanting more!"

The church will provide:

• Advertising materials: printed color posters and cards

• Listings in local on-line and print media

• Printed concert program. Details for the program are due a week before the concert and should be emailed to Paul Ellison, together with any biographical information performers would like included

• An usher at the performance to distribute programs and collect donations if applicable

• Assistance with hosting of reception is available for a token charge of $50 (garden and hall space, assistance with setup and cleanup, glasses and dishware, some basic refreshments)

• Rehearsal time in venue by advance arrangement with Paul Ellison

Artist responsibilities:

• Timely content for promotional materials and programs

• Active and independent promotion of the concert

• Insurance for the afternoon

We require a Certificate of Insurance showing Church of the Advent of Christ the King as additional insured. This covers "bodily injury and property damage insuring Renter and Owner with a minimum coverage of one million dollars ($1,000,000)" This is easily obtained by anyone or any institution that already has insurance. The insurance company will charge a nominal fee. We are a small non-profit church and not a for-profit venue. Without this insurance rider, individuals who serve on the parish vestry are personally exposed to liability claims. If you have Homeowners or Renters insurance, you can get a Rider for Church of the Advent for this event for as low as $25.00. • Assistance setting up a CD table and selling CDs at th reception (if desired)

Planning and Promotion

The performer may choose to collect by freewill donation or charge a fixed amount for the concert (with or without advance tickets, which are not managed by the church). All proceeds may be kept by the artist. The church does not provide a “built-in audience.” It is the responsibility of the performer(s) to generate interest and attract attendance. The expectation is that the artists are able to guarantee an attendance of 50 (which if you have never promoted a concert before is much harder than it sounds).

Prospective performers need to have one or more of the following:

• Association with a musical institution or school
